I don’t think John Hurt is the missing doctor exactly. The way I interpreted it was he was the man before he became the Doctor. I saw it as after the time lords all died, he wanted to start anew, thus becoming the Doctor. So, basically, I think John Hurt was the “0th” Doctor, if you will.
